3 Reasons Why Young Creatives Experience Burnout
Today we’re talking about the negatives creatives happen to experience when obsession for their craft takes over life.
This newsletter is for young creatives who are having trouble with burnout.
By the time you’re done reading you will know exactly how to beat burnout in your creative journey instead of resenting the art you love.
I have worked with dozens of creatives to expand their thinking about creativity and productivity.
I help implement specific productivity and maintenance systems into their everyday lives so they can spend more time focusing on crafting and ideation.
Reason #1: Young people neglect their health
Unless your parents are on top of their game in teaching you to prioritize certain pillars of health like:
-Sunlight
-Adequate & Essential Hydration
-Movement (Resistance Training & Zone 2 Cardio for longevity)
-Nutrition (yes, eating pizza everyday for weeks is not going to help you create your best work)
-SLEEP (Optimize for sleep; please stop taking melatonin as well)
Health comes before your happiness and wealth.
A healthy man wishes for many things, a sick man only wishes for his health.
We spend so much of our incredibly limited time participating in a trade off system.
Eating like shit and not exercising for the sake of “the grind” and saving money is not going be the ROI you expect it to be.
In life you pay two people - the farmer or the doctor.
Reason #2: Frequent technology use and consumption limits your creative expanse
Social media and endless streaming - you never have to be bored again.
Creativity becomes hindered when you consume.
You start to mimic rather than create from source.
Being in front of a screen for 18 hours of the day begins to sap your creativity because there is no interaction with life.
Life imitates art - go create and experience new things outside of just being in front of blue lights.
My solution: App Blockers (Optimal for Focus)
1. For Desktop: StayFocusd (Chrome Extension)
2. For Mobile: one sec (iOS and Google Play)
Bonus tip: Start to document and be aware of your screen-time on devices.
More time on screens is linked to more frequent depressive episodes
Reason #3: Lack of systems
Without the guidance of systems what occurs naturally?
-Chaos
Creativity systems are unique to every individual.
While productivity systems can turn anyone into the next Elon Musk - if you allow them to work and stay consistent.
Creativity systems are usually seen as incredible to one person and terrible to others.
It’s a workflow rather than a system.
A lack of systems causes you to fluster when you get sucker punched.
We are always engaging in the dance of life.
A simple balance between chaos and order.
Increasing your skill with the productivity pillars will increase your mental capacity.
Why? Because you no longer have to worry about the mundane and repetitive tasks and problems that come with the territory of being a living being.
You have a system to deal with it.
Conclusion:
Focusing on becoming more productive and limiting your exposure to distraction is the “shortcut” to avoiding burnout.
Typically if you are burnt out on something - your heart isn’t really in it. This is not what you want to be doing - find something else.
But, we often confuse burnout with a lack of action.
Which snowballs into having large amounts of anxiety over the chaos that comes without having a system in place.
Being productive and being creative go hand in hand.
You discover creativity when you stray from the traditional approach.
You discover productivity when you lock into something consistent.
If you’re not dividing your thinking into separate groups for each - you are playing at a disadvantage.
This is how you discover your edge
